Building A More Connected Sarnia

nuSarnia is a community-led organization working to strengthen human connection by shaping people-centred streets, neighbourhoods, and public spaces.

We believe strong communities are built when people feel safe, welcome, and connected to one another and the places they share. Through placemaking, advocacy, and citizen-led initiatives, nuSarnia works to create environments where it is easy to meet, linger, and belong.

Why This Work Matters

Sarnia is at a pivotal moment.

Like many mid-sized cities, it is experiencing rising loneliness, declining youth independence, and neighbourhoods largely designed around convenience rather than everyday human interaction.

At the same time, communities across North America are recognizing that quality of life is shaped by more than buildings and roads. Walkable neighbourhoods, vibrant public spaces, and strong civic culture are increasingly what attract families, retain talent, and build resilient cities.

nuSarnia exists to help bridge that gap.

By activating public spaces, supporting citizen-led initiatives, and advancing people-centred design, we help rebuild the everyday connections that make communities healthier, more welcoming, and more vibrant.

What We Mean By Connection

Connection is the foundation of thriving communities.

When people connect to one another, to their neighbourhoods, and to their city, communities become healthier, safer, and more resilient. For nuSarnia, connection means creating everyday conditions where people naturally interact.

People meeting on neighbourhood streets.

Gathering in welcoming public spaces.

Children moving safely and independently.

Neighbours feeling comfortable and welcome.

Residents shaping their community together.

Connection is not a “nice-to-have.”

It is essential social infrastructure that supports well-being, belonging, and civic pride. That is why connection is nuSarnia’s most important measure of success.

Our Role in the Community

nuSarnia works at the intersection of people, place, and policyWe act as a connector, catalyst, and advocate for people-centred community change.

Connector

We bring together residents, organizations, businesses, and decision-makers to collaborate on ideas that strengthen neighbourhood life.

Catalyst

We pilot creative projects, activate underused spaces, and demonstrate how connection-focused design can improve everyday life.

Advocate

We translate community insight into evidence-based advocacy that helps shape planning, policy, and investment decisions.

Rebuilding Social Infrastructure

Cities invest billions in physical infrastructure like roads, bridges and buildings.

But the infrastructure that determines whether people feel connected, engaged, and proud of where they live is social infrastructure.

Social infrastructure includes:

  • welcome public spaces
  • neighbourhood gathering places
  • civic participation
  • opportunities for everyday interaction

nuSarnia focuses on strengthening this layer of city-building by activating neighbourhood spaces, empowering residents to lead initatives, and creating opportunities for connection in daily life.

Overtime this work strengthens civic participation, neighbourhood resilience, and the long-term vitality of Sarnia.

Our Vision for Sarnia

nuSarnia envisions a community intentionally designed for people of all ages and abilities. A city where streets, neighbourhoods, and public spaces are welcoming, safe, and full of life.

Where children move safely and independently through their neighbourhoods.
Where neighbours know one another and feel proud of the places they share.
Where residents actively shape their communities and participate in the future of their city.

We believe strong communities are built for people. Infrastructure matters, but people matter more. That is why we ask one simple question of everything we do:

Does this help people connect?

If the answer is yes, we know we are moving in the right direction.

nuSarnia is committed to building a more connected, welcoming, and people-centred Sarnia — one neighbourhood, one street, and one relationship at a time.
